Inhabiting Spaces

The works in this series were created for an international exhibition curated by Bozenna Wisniewska entitled Inhabiting Spaces: Helena Hadala, Katie Ohe, Laurel Smith and Greg Payce. The show, organized by the Triangle Gallery of Visual Arts traveled to the Centre for Contemporary Art in Gdansk, Poland and the Taidenhalli Centre of Contemporary Art, in Porvoo, Finland. A satellite show of Inhabiting Spaces was presented at the Museum of Fine Arts, Porto University, in Porto, Portugal. A combination of both shows was shown at the Triangle Gallery of Visual Arts.

For Inhabiting Spaces my intent was to explore the ambiguity between vertical and horizontal space. After Coomba #1 thru #4, large scale mixed media charcoal drawings, are based on a series of drawings that were inspired by a residency in Australia. Bozenna Wisniewska, the curator of the exhibition, writes, "The work evokes a landscape of dreams and realities as much as it has an ability to link the past, the present and the space it inhabits". The pieces entitled Inside Out elude boundaries and explore the poetic sense of space where time is not linear and space is not empty. Tabula Rasa, demonstrate a new direction in my interest in perception, a metaphysical look at 'inhabiting space'. The exploration of the duality of material and non-material is exemplified by the interplay of the imagery of my cast shadow superimposed onto a matrix constructed of four equal panels of wood, metal, mylar and drywall. The challenge of creating these works was to retain the enigmatic character of the cast shadow and integrate the inherent material qualities of the disparate template. The process utilizes a mixed media technique of charcoal, conté, ink, rust, and paint to create equilibrium between image and space.
