My work reflects the ongoing synthesis of my Eastern European roots and interests in Zen Buddhist philosophy. I have long been fascinated with the artistic and philosophical traditions of the Orient, which led to an extended artistic residency of two and a half years in Japan. The most important insight for me, during this sojourn in the Orient, was that the traditional philosophical approach to the creative process was not about creating a 'picture' or image of something, but that it was in itself a refined form of meditation.

For the last thirty years I have never tired of exploring the rich terrain of ambiguity existing between the contrasting cultures of Orient and Occident. It has allowed for the exploration between intellect and intuition, idea and action, creating a fertile ground for nature-based abstraction. Within the interplay of form and space and emphasis on an ambiguous middle ground, the work suggests several interwoven realities and attempts to create a vision or spirit resonance. The creative process becomes a contemplative process and an attempt at self-revelation expressing the spirit of form rather than form itself. Through the continual interplay between outer and inner worlds the paintings evoke a poetic visual image, a type of innerscape reflecting rather than describing my perceptual world. I explore imagery that is inspired by but goes beyond the perceptual world. The works become discernible analogies reflecting invisible terrain permitting contemplation to become visible and take on tangible form.
